Go Play

Luke 10:25 (ESV)
“Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

There is a golf club near my village. To play one must pay greens fees and cart fees. But, if one is a member the prices are covered in an initiation fee and annual payments. I sometimes dream of membership and will drop by the clubhouse. I’ll ask the man behind the counter, “What will it cost to become a member?” I’m testing him. I already know the answer. He knows I can’t afford it. Take this situation and listen to the lawyer test Jesus, “What shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

Jesus tells the lawyer what he already knows with the question, “What is written in the Law?” The lawyer wants to know what he must do. Jesus tells him well-knowing that the lawyer cannot do that. Not one of us can do or keep the Law as Jesus commands us. Still Jesus will let us into the Kingdom because he knows our heart. It’s called grace.

One day at the golf course, I dropped by and wanted to play. I asked, “How much?” The man told me the greens fee. I reached in my pocket and didn’t have enough money. He looked at me and said, “Keep your money. Go play.” I asked, “Really?” He said with a smile, “Yes, I know where you work.” That was grace.

It is by God’s grace we receive eternal life, Christ paid the price, and we get to play eternally in the Kingdom. That’s Good News to me. I can’t even afford to play for a day at the local golf club.
